History of the Gellert Bath

As early as the Middle-Ages, a hospital was built to exploit the medicinal springs located at the foot of Gellért Hill. During the Turkish occupation of Hungary, baths were added to the hospital.

The new structure, raised in the 1600's, was named Sáros-fürdő (Muddy-Baths), after its muddy pond, to which therapeutic powers were attributed.

The Gellért Bath of today is a Hungarian Art Nouveau Palace. Hungarian Art Nouveau is unique, it has  oriental looking windows, domes and frescos on the ceilings. It also has Hungarian folk motives sewn into the decoration on the walls.
The building has opened its walls in 1918 and it was designed for the beautiful, elegant and wealthy of that era. Its guests included kings and queens and the industry magnets of this golden time.

When it opened, the Gellert Hotel and the Gellert Bath was one institution directly connected on the first floor. The bath was luxurious with all the amenities expected by its guests.

Today the Gellert Hotel is a 3-star hotel, last renovated in the 1970s. The hotel has a new owner since 2019 and everyone hopes it will be renovated to its former glory.

The Gellert Bath today is owned by the city of Budapest, which has renovated the pools and the changing cabins recently, thus now you can feel the luxury of old times.

The bath is decorated with a wealth of original Art Nouveau furnishing, artistic mosaics, stained glass windows and sculptures.

Pools & Treatments

The 13 mineral springs supply the Gellért Bath with water at a temperature varying between 27°C and 48°C. These waters are particularly effective in treating joint and muscle damage, metabolism related problems and neuritis.

Besides the medicinal baths, there are also effervescent bath – as well as an outdoor swimming pool featuring a wave machine which operates for 10 minutes every hour. Gellért Bath also provides all the other standard therapeutic facilities and services.

The Gellért Baths complex includes thermal baths, which are small pools containing water from Gellért Hill's mineral hot springs. The water contains for example calcium, magnesium, sulfate, and fluoride.

The temperature of the water at the thermal pools is between 35 °C and 40 °C. People are advised to stay only for a short time in the thermal pools and interject pauses between the usage.

Gellert Bath as a Unique Event Venue

The bath is very special and popular event location. Gala dinners and evening receptions are held in the lobby of the bath regularly.

The welcome cocktail is often served on the galleries of the main pool and a synchronised swimming performance can also be arranged in the main pool.

Ideally ca. 150 people fit into the one part of the lobby, but in case of using all the lobby, the maximum capacity is 250 pax at round tables of 10 people.

There is no limitation to arrange performances during the event.
